Michael woke up at 11 am because a knock at the door startled him. He got up and went to the door half-asleep. It was a slip of paper. On top of it, it was written, “Eviction Notice.” Looking at it, he walked to the fridge, grabbed a beer, and sat down on a plastic chair in front of a crowded kitchen table. He took a deep breath and sighed. He wasn’t surprised. He hadn’t paid rent for the past three months; it was a matter of time. Truth be told, this was sort of routine for him. He was evicted from three places before this one. Knowing the routine, he started packing his stuff up, then took a drive to the local grocery store to see if they had some empty boxes they were throwing out and some tape. It was that time again.
He opened his phone and started scrolling through Facebook ads to see if there was another flat for rent nearby. He liked being in this area because it was near his work at the local auto repair shop where he did maintenance work on cars. Then he came across an advert. It read, “If you’re not moving forward in life, you’re moving backwards,” Coach De Bruyns. He clicked on it, and it sounded like the Coach was talking directly to him: “Celebrate Masculinity, show up, own it, man up, take responsibility.” It kinda sounded a bit like his father, who passed away ten years ago in an accident. He saw a link that said, “Book a free 15-minute session.” Shit, he didn’t have money, but it was worth a try.
He booked an appointment, and a day later he was on a video call with a brown, Middle Eastern-looking guy with green eyes and very good English. He was surprised but kept an open mind. The Coach was direct. He jumped straight in: “What troubles you today?” Michael explained that he was being evicted from his flat and that he was now looking for another flat. The Coach interrupted, “Can you afford to pay for another flat?” Michael said, “Yes, I have the deposit.” The Coach responded flatly, “Pay the man his money that you owe him, or make an arrangement. The difference between a man and a boy is that a man takes responsibility and doesn’t expect anything for nothing.” The fifteen minutes were up. Michael left the call feeling disturbed. What a rude mother-fucker, he thought. Then he got a ping. It was an email inviting him to book a follow-up session for $100 bucks. He thought to himself, “Fuck that shit. That mother fucker gonna make me pay so he can tell me that I suck. What a piece of shit.”
That night, when Michael went to bed, he couldn’t sleep. The coach’s directness got under his skin. Those sharp green eyes kept piercing through him every time he closed his eyes. He pulled out his phone and said out loud, “Who the fuck is this guy?” So he googled him. It read:

“Fuck me… this guy is legit.” He thought for a few more minutes. Got up and took a walk outside while smoking a cigarette. He clicked on a few videos of Coach De Bruyns and finally said to himself, “Fuck it. I’ll pay him, okay. I’ll pay the motherfucker!” The next day, Michael called up the owner, acknowledged that he got the eviction notice, said that he’d like to stay, and that he’d pay the outstanding balance in full. The owner said, “And the legal fees I incurred in procuring the eviction notice.” Tempted to use strong language, Michael decided it was best to keep a cool head. “How much is that?” He said, “$200..” Michael replied, “Look, I struggled to get the rent together.” Seeing that he was sincere, the owner decided to make a deal: “Pay me what’s due on the rent; you can pay the $200 at the end of the month. How about that?”
Ironically, it felt good. Michael felt lighter. He even started to clean up his apartment now that the rent was paid. He circled back to some videos of Coach De Bruyns. “Do you exercise regularly?” the coach said in one video. “What the fuck. This motherfucker is talking to me again.” He made a mental note. “I’m gonna book a session as soon as I get paid. I need to speak to this guy.” Thus began Michael’s transformation with Coach De Bruyns.
